WE’RE NO. 1 (AGAIN)
Dr. JoAnne Graf (bottom row, far right) guided the Seminoles to one of their best seasons in 1982. FSU won the Florida AIAW State Championship and AIAW Regional Championship en route to their second consecutive trip to the AIAW Women’s College World Series. There, the Noles steamrolled the competition with a 10-0 win over Georgia Southern, a 17-2 win over South Florida and a 19-4 win over North Carolina-Charlotte — with the last two games suspended due to the 15-run mercy rule. That success set up the title game against in-state rival Florida. Behind the efforts of SS Darby Cottle and P Susan Painter, the Seminoles defeated the Gators 9-4 to claim their second AIAW National Championship in as many years. FSU’s incredible 56 victories in that season stood as a program record until 1991.
