THE CURSE-BREAKERS
Date: October 21, 1989
When the No. 14 Seminoles met the No. 11 Auburn Tigers in 1989, FSU hoped to end a nearly decade-long curse. Not since 1980 had the Seminoles beaten a ranked opponent at Doak Campbell Stadium. For the first three quarters, the Noles were rolling, leading 22-3. In his first collegiate start, RB Amp Lee subbed in for injured Dexter Carter. To the chants of “Amp Lee for Heisman!” the freshman carried the ball 25 times for 109 yards. The Seminole defense was able to hold off a Tiger comeback, ending the game with a 22-14 victory. And thus, the curse came to a well-deserved end.
