THE CHERRY ON TOP
Date: 1970s
C Cherry Rivers (No. 33) was a nuisance to opposing teams in the post, swarming loose rebounds while excelling on offense. From 1976 to 1980, Rivers collected 1,029 rebounds in her career, setting a program record that stood for 34 years. Her 1,376 career points also remain in the top 20 in program history. After her playing days were over, Rivers stayed close to home, becoming a graduate assistant for the team in 1981 and then a full-time assistant coach in 1983. In 2015, Rivers was named an ACC Women’s Basketball Legend, one of the highest honors given to outstanding players who helped shape conference history.
