SOCCER ARRIVES IN TALLAHASSEE
On September 10, 1995, in just the team’s second match, FSU earned the first win in program history with a 5-1 victory over West Florida, played at home in front of more than 600 fans. D Janine Lavoie scored the first goal in program history just 10 minutes in, heading home a pass from D Molly Nye. The inaugural team was led by head coach Heather Kerby, a former Canadian national team player who helped lay the groundwork for the program’s future. Kerby’s first recruiting class consisted almost entirely of freshmen, with 13 of 14 signees entering their first collegiate season. The Seminoles finished the 1995 season with a 4-14-1 record while establishing early standards of competitiveness. Goalkeeper Melissa Juhl set a program benchmark that still stands, recording 155 saves during the 1995 season.
