SHOULDER PADS OF A CHAMPION
Date: 1990s, 2000s
These shoulder pads belonged to Chris Weinke, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback who led FSU to the 1999 National Championship. At 28 years old, Weinke was the oldest Heisman winner in history — he was an ex-pro baseball player-turned-college football legend. Weinke threw for 4,167 yards and 33 touchdowns in the 2000 season alone, leading the Noles to their third straight national title game appearance. Known for his poise, deep-ball accuracy and leadership, Weinke finished his FSU career with a 32-3 record as a starter. Coach Bobby Bowden, speaking about the quarterback’s maturity, said that Weinke “was a man when he came here. He was impeccable in his training and schoolwork.”
