PLAYING FOR KEEPS
Serving as starting goalkeeper for a brand new intercollegiate program can be difficult, but GK Melissa Juhl proved her worth. Playing in the program’s first four seasons, Juhl set a program record with 155 saves in the inaugural 1995 campaign. She ultimately finished her career with 297 saves, a record matched by Seminole legend Kelsey Wys, while her 4,647 minutes in the net stood as a record for over a decade. In 1996, Juhl became the first Seminole to earn ACC All-Conference honors (second team). She compiled a 1.68 goals-against average and 76 saves as FSU went 12-7-1, the first winning record in program history. “But we’re getting better, very quickly,” she said. “We have to play with our hearts and without fear. We were very nervous last year. Now we know what to expect.” Juhl’s steadfast determination and belief in the program would impact the next generation of great Nole goalies.
