HIGHLIGHTING TALLAHASSEE
Date: 1990s
Head coach Marynell Meadors worked tirelessly to bring the Seminole basketball program onto the national scene, and FSU made their mark in the 1990-91 season. In January, FSU ranked No. 25 in the AP poll, the team’s first national ranking in over eight years. By early March, FSU narrowly defeated South Carolina, 54-53, to capture the first Metro Conference Tournament championship in program history. Just one week later, the Seminoles rolled Appalachian State 96-57 in the first round of the 1991 NCAA Tournament, clinching the first tournament win in program history. Of the win, Meadors said, “We certainly didn’t think it was going to be this easy, but it’s nice.”
