GALE-FORCE RIVALRY
Date: 1980s
Every year, FSU faced Miami in a battle of coaching giants. The Hurricanes were led by Ron Fraser, a relief pitcher for the Seminoles during the 1950s. Fraser became Miami’s skipper in 1963 and, over the next 30 seasons, the winningest coach in college baseball with 1,271 victories. On the other side was Mike Martin, the Seminole head coach who would break Fraser’s record and end up with 2,029 career wins. “We don’t have a bigger regular-season series than this one,” Martin said in 1986. “I feel a tremendous amount of pressure when we play Miami. I think Ron probably feels the same way about us.” Martin faced Miami over 200 times in his career and secured his 100th win against the Hurricanes in 2018.
