FROM STAUBACH TO WARD
Date: 1993 Season
Not many argued against Charlie Ward winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as the nation’s best senior quarterback in 1993. The star QB went 264-of-380 passing with 3,032 yards and an incredible 27 touchdowns to just four interceptions. Early in the season, Lee Corso, an ESPN analyst and former FSU football player, called Ward “the best college quarterback since Roger Staubach in 1963.” Coach Bobby Bowden agreed: “I put him in a category with a Roger Staubach, with a Fran Tarkenton, with a Doug Flutie. He’s the kind of guy who says, ‘Give me the football, and y’all get open.’” Like those QB greats, Ward remains one of the most decorated college football players in history.
