DUKING IT OUT
FSU was ready for the task when No. 6 Duke came to Tallahassee in January 1993, as more than 13,000 fans packed the arena to see the end-to-end game. With the score tied 80-80 at the end of regulation, the Seminoles and Blue Devils went to overtime. Down 88-86 with just over a minute left in the extra period, FSU looked toward superstar G Sam Cassell. However, it was reserve Byron Wells who provided the intense finish. The 6-foot-10 forward drained a dramatic fadeaway trey with 3.6 seconds left on the clock to push FSU past Duke, 89-88. It marked the first win over Duke in program history. The fifth-year senior said after the game, “I wanted to run up in the stands and celebrate with the crowd. To hear them cheering like that and to realize we just beat Duke and I made the shot, it’s the best feeling I’ve ever had in my basketball life.”
