- 1 OF 1: COACH MIKE “11” MARTIN •
- WHAT A STEAL!
WHAT A STEAL!
Date: 1998 Season
Mike Martin earned his 1,000th career win in dramatic fashion. With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 8th inning, and Seminole runners on first and third, Martin signaled from the dugout to try a risky double steal. CF Brian Cox jetted from first base, causing the Jacksonville pitcher to step off the mound for the pickoff attempt. With the pitcher’s back to him, 3B Jose Zabala easily scored from third to give FSU the lead. The Noles hung on to win, 4-3. Martin became the 20th DI coach to reach the 1,000-win mark and, at the time, the second-fastest to do so, trailing only Gene Stephenson of Wichita State. This commemorative mini bat recognized Martin’s milestone.
