USHERING IN A NEW TEAM
Date: 1970s
Doctorate student Millie Usher became coach in 1974 and served in the role for the next two seasons, becoming the program’s first multi-season head coach. She steered the program in its early years as an official intercollegiate team, while also serving as the Seminole softball coach. Usher eventually wrote her dissertation about the history of women’s athletics at FSU. When asked about the importance of women’s collegiate athletics in 2018, Usher said, “I think it’s important to continue providing opportunities for [women] to enjoy the play, movement and physical success. It’s a male phenomenon, but women enjoy the same value in participating in sports. It is a joyful feeling that you get.”
