THE ULTIMATE FRONT-RUNNER
Los Angeles native F Leah Gallegos emerged as one of FSU’s biggest scoring threats during her career from 2002 to 2004. She recorded at least 10 points each season, highlighted by a sophomore campaign with 39 points and 18 goals — the latter set a program record that lasted until 2007. On October 27, 2003, Gallegos tied two program records with eight points and four goals in a 7-0 victory over FAU. In the 2003 NCAA Tournament, Gallegos netted the game-winning, double-overtime goals against No. 16 Auburn in the second round and No. 9 West Virginia in the Sweet 16 to propel FSU to the Elite Eight. “There’s times when she’s double- or triple-teamed and she’ll come out with the ball,” said teammate F Julia Schugg. “It’s just amazing. She’s the ultimate front-runner.” Fittingly, Gallegos became the first Seminole to earn First-Team All-American honors (by Soccer Buzz) that season. Gallegos remains in the program’s top 10 in several categories with 28 goals, 11 game-winning goals and 197 shots.
