THE HELMET THAT CHANGED THE PROGRAM
Date: 1970s, 1980s
This game-worn helmet belonged to Ron Simmons, FSU’s iconic No. 50 and one of the most dominant defensive players in program history. With scuffs and wear marks still visible, the helmet is a battle-tested relic of Simmons’ playing days from 1977 to 1980. The helmet doesn’t just tell a story of hits — it tells the story of a new era. Simmons’ arrival in Tallahassee transformed the program’s identity, instilling toughness and national relevance. Frank Kush, the former Arizona State coach, said of Simmons, “We tried everything — double-teaming, running away from him, axing, holding, you name it. Nothing worked. That No. 50, he just plain ate our lunch. He may be the best noseguard I’ve ever seen.”
