THE HEISMAN TROPHY FOR BAD GUYS
Date: 1987 Season
Senior ILB Paul McGowan became the first Seminole to win the Butkus Award in 1987. His 150 total tackles that season, including 97 solo tackles and 11 behind the line, remain in the top 10 in program history. Legendary Illinois LB Dick Butkus himself presented the award, which McGowan dubbed “the Heisman Trophy for Bad Guys.” As a four-year starter from Winter Park, Florida, McGowan cemented his legacy as one of the most dominant linebackers in program history.
