THE FIRST NCAA TOURNEY BID
Date: 1980s
Already a superstar in Tallahassee, junior F Sue Galkantas led the Noles to a bid in the 1983 NCAA Tournament, the first such appearance in program history. Notably, FSU became the first women’s basketball team from Florida to earn a spot in the tournament. Galkantas led the team in scoring with 16.9 points per game that season and was determined to use her offensive leadership in the postseason matchup. However, in the first-round meeting with Ole Miss, Galkantas picked up three fouls early in the second half and fouled out with 7:30 remaining. Even with limited playing time, Galkantas scored her 1,828th point in the game, passing Jim Oler as FSU’s all-time leading scorer — for both the men’s and women’s programs.
