THE DESIRE TO BE THE BEST
Arguably the greatest defensive back in FSU history, Deion Sanders added another accolade to his resume with the 1988 Jim Thorpe Award. That season, Sanders had five interceptions, including two pick-sixes, and he led the nation with a 15.24-yard punt-return average. He was also the first unanimous All-American in program history. “This is the culmination of my college career. Being an All-American wasn’t enough for me,” Sanders said. “I always wanted to be the best at my position, and now I am.” The Atlanta Falcons selected Sanders with the No. 5 pick of the 1989 NFL Draft, and he spent 14 years in the NFL. In 2011, Sanders was inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.
