THE ’67 SQUAD
PK Grant Guthrie had some huge kicks during the 1967 season, but he came up especially clutch during the Gator Bowl. With 15 seconds remaining, Guthrie booted a 26-yard field goal to tie No. 11 Penn State, capping a remarkable second-half comeback after the Seminoles trailed 17-0 at halftime. The 17-17 final preserved FSU’s No. 15 national ranking and completed a 7-2-1 season that included a landmark road win over rival Florida, which was FSU’s first victory in Gainesville. Guthrie’s ice-cold composure under pressure made him a standout in a season that also featured WR Ron Sellers’ rise to stardom and the team’s growing national reputation under coach Bill Peterson. Sports Illustrated ranked the Seminoles No. 4 in the nation after the Gator Bowl, a nod to the grit and resilience that defined the ’67 squad.
