FSU’S FIRST TOP-10
This photograph captures a defining moment from FSU’s historic 1964 season — its stunning 48-6 homecoming win over No. 5 Kentucky. FSU exploded to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and held the Wildcats scoreless until the final 30 seconds. Star WR Fred Biletnikoff racked up 104 yards and two touchdowns, while HB Phil Spooner added two more scores on the ground. The blowout win catapulted FSU to No. 10 in the AP poll, marking the first top-10 ranking in program history. Led by head coach Bill Peterson and quarterback Steve Tensi, the team finished the regular season 8-1-1 and ranked No. 11 in the final Coaches Poll. They went on to defeat Oklahoma 36-19 in their first-ever Gator Bowl appearance and win, solidifying 1964 as a breakthrough year in Seminole football history.
