MOVING UP THE TEAM LADDER
Date: 1950s
Before he became a College Basketball Hall-of-Fame coach, Hugh Durham suited up in Garnet and Gold himself. Durham played guard for three seasons from 1956 to 1959, and his name is still visible on the Seminole record books today. He remains in the top 20 for scoring with 1,381 total points and an 18.9 average. He had six career games hitting all free-throw attempts (minimum nine attempts), more than any other player in program history. Plus, Durham’s 43-point performance against Stetson in 1957 stood as a team record until 1971. Durham returned to FSU as an assistant coach in 1961, serving under J.K. “Bud” Kennedy. He was promoted to head coach in 1966 following Kennedy’s passing.
