LIGHTING WITH LEGENDS
Date: February 15, 1966
Cleveland Indians shortstop Dick Howser (far right) took a seat with baseball legends during the 1966 “Lights Up” banquet at FSU. Joining him, from left to right, were New York Yankees pitcher and National Baseball Hall of Famer Lefty Gomez; FSU head baseball coach Fred Hatfield; and Boston Red Sox great and National Baseball Hall-of-Famer Ted Williams. The event, held at the Florida State University Union, was organized to raise funds to install lights at FSU’s baseball field. At the time, Howser was in the midst of an eight-year MLB career and remained closely connected to FSU, where he had played as a standout shortstop before beginning his long association with the program as a coach.
