HOLY DOAK
Doak Sheridan Campbell became president of the Florida State College for Women in 1941. Campbell led the institution through World War II, maintaining a certain sense of normalcy during a time of turmoil. On the other side of the war, Campbell took on the new challenge of expanding the university to include the registration of male students. In one of his first acts of business, Campbell helped establish men’s intercollegiate athletics, including the football team that began play in 1947. The first football games were held at Centennial Field, though the team quickly outgrew its home. Campbell was instrumental in the construction of a new 15,000-seat stadium that could better fit the growing numbers of Seminole fans. In turn, when that stadium opened in 1950, FSU named it after its president. Campbell was inducted into the FSU Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 1977 in recognition of his illustrious career.
