GARNET AND GOLD GLOVER
No. 5 FSU faced a defensive battle against No. 6 USC in the Sweet 16 of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Fortunately for the Seminoles, Caroline Jeffers was in goal. A walk-on-turned-backup-turned-starting goalkeeper, Jeffers was undeterred when USC scored in the first half. FSU tied the game in regulation, and after two scoreless overtime periods, the match went into a shootout. The Trojans and Seminoles alternated penalty kicks, each team making four in a row. Jeffers wore these gloves for USC’s fifth attempt, making a save to deny another score. M Yujie Zhao then netted an attempt to end the game with a FSU victory, 5-4 on penalty kicks. “We train for this every single day,” Jeffers said. “Just always be ready mentally.” With the win, FSU advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2015.
