FSU’S EARLY BOWL BANNERS
Date: 1940s, 1950s
These three banners honor FSU’s first bowl appearances, each marking a pivotal step in the program’s early rise. The 1949 Cigar Bowl banner commemorates a 19-6 victory over Wofford in Tampa — FSU’s first postseason win, just two years after launching the football team. In 1954, the Seminoles traveled to El Paso for the Sun Bowl, falling 47-20 to Texas Western in the program’s first nationally televised game. The 1958 Bluegrass Bowl banner recalls a 15-6 loss to Oklahoma State in frigid Louisville. Despite the defeat, the game was historic, as it remains the only edition of the short-lived bowl.
