FROM TULLY TO THE HALL OF FAME
Following a standout playing career with the Seminoles in the late 1950s, Hugh Durham (right) served as a graduate assistant in 1960 and became assistant coach ahead of the 1961-62 season. He joined the staff of J.K. “Bud” Kennedy (left), FSU’s head coach since the team’s second season in 1948-49. Durham took over as head coach in 1966 following Kennedy’s passing. Under his leadership, Durham guided the Seminoles to a 230-95 career record, three NCAA Tournament appearances and a transition from independent play to the Metro Conference. His first team featured F Lenny Hall, the first Black varsity player in program history, a major statement for a Southern school of the era. After leading FSU to their first Final Four appearance in 1972, Durham did the same as head coach of Georgia in 1983 — the first DI coach to lead two programs to the Final Four for the first time. For all his accomplishments at FSU and beyond, Durham was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.
