COURTING MARTIN

Mike Martin, the basketball coach? Most fans recognize him as the winningest coach in college baseball history, but Martin actually coached basketball at Tallahassee Community College and Godby High School in Tallahassee in the early 1970s. FSU head baseball coach Woody Woodward named him an assistant coach in 1975, bringing Martin back to the dugout for good. He served as an assistant under Woodward for four years and another season under Dick Howser in 1979. When Martin was offered the head coach job ahead of the 1980 season, he said, “I have no intention of ever leaving Florida State.” He was true to his word.
