BUILDING BLOCKS OF A LEGACY
Date: 1960s
Before becoming one of the most iconic head coaches in college football history, Bobby Bowden spent time as an assistant coach at FSU. From 1962 to 1965, he served under head coach Bill Peterson working with the team’s wide receivers. During that time, Bowden gained a reputation as an innovative offensive mind. After his first stint at FSU, Bowden went on to become head coach at West Virginia, where he turned around the Mountaineers program. His success there caught the attention of FSU administrators, and in 1976, he returned to Tallahassee as head coach. He took over a struggling program and ultimately transformed it into a national powerhouse.
