BATTLE TESTED CHARLIE WARD
Like most players in the 1994 Orange Bowl, QB Charlie Ward had a backup uniform, including these pants, in case of heavy wear and tear. The opposing Nebraska Cornhuskers didn’t make it easy, sacking Ward a season-high five times. Despite the challenging Husker defense, along with a bout of flu and tendinitis of the elbow days before the big game, Ward was undeterred. With FSU trailing 16-15 and just over a minute left to play, the star QB drove the Seminoles 62 yards down the field to set up the game-winning field goal. “I didn’t have any doubts,” said WR Tamarick Vanover. “We knew he was for real and we knew he would do it. We knew we weren’t going to lose this game — not with Charlie.” FSU defeated Nebraska in the Orange Bowl, 18-16, and claimed the national title with a No. 1 AP poll ranking. Battle-tested Ward was named Orange Bowl MVP.
