A TOP TWO-SPORT ATHLETE
Date: 2000
Though you wouldn’t think about it now, football was not always QB Chris Weinke’s first sport of choice. Weinke was recruited by more than 70 Division I schools, but he initially declined those offers and spent six years in affiliate MLB leagues. Head coach Bobby Bowden promised Weinke a scholarship spot on the football team should he ever wish to return. Bowden made good on his promise and allowed a 25-year-old Weinke on the team in 1997. The gamble paid off, and Weinke became the oldest Heisman winner at age 28 in 2000.
