A NUMBER FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS
Date: Undated
From the moment No. 17 Charlie Ward stepped on the field, he became a fan favorite. Not only did Ward secure FSU’s first Heisman Trophy in 1993, he also won the Maxwell Award and Davey O’Brien Award that same year. Ward was so beloved by the Seminole fandom that he became the first player to have his jersey retired during a season. Ward continued to use the No. 17 after leaving FSU, wearing the jersey after being chosen in the first round of the 1994 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks.
