A NATION-LEADING SEASON
Date: 2000 Season
Chris Weinke’s performance in the 1999 season was dominant and resilient in more ways than one. In addition to a national title, Weinke received the Brian Piccolo Award, given to the most courageous player in the ACC. Weinke suffered a serious neck injury the previous season, but came back in 1999 to have conference-highs in passing yards and touchdowns. Weinke built on his progress and led No. 3 FSU to an Orange Bowl appearance in 2000, the same season he won the Heisman Trophy as the nation’s top player. The program was quick to recognize Weinke for his contributions. On April 7, 2001, FSU honored Weinke by retiring his No. 16 jersey.
