A FULL-TIME SEMINOLE
Date: 1990s
Charlie Ward spent all five years of his college career with the Seminoles. After redshirting his sophomore season and playing for the FSU basketball team, Ward became the full-time starting quarterback — and the first Black starting QB in program history — beginning in the 1992 season. Over the next two seasons, Ward compiled 5,679 passing yards and 49 touchdowns. His efforts were rewarded as he was named the co-MVP of the National Championship game for the 1993 season, along with Nebraska quarterback Tommie Frazier, and, more importantly, the first Heisman winner in program history.
