MAKING NOISE IN THE ACC
The Seminoles knew conference competition would be tough when they joined the ACC in 1995. Between that inaugural season and 2002, FSU had beaten Duke just once in eight matches. Yet fortunes changed in 2003 as the Seminoles fielded a squad that would finish ranked fourth in the nation. On November 10, the No. 22 Seminoles hosted the No. 12 Blue Devils at the Seminole Soccer Complex. Star F Leah Gallegos opened the scoring with a goal in the 39th minute and doubled up with a second score in the 77th minute. Shortly after, F Julia Schnugg added another to put the icing on top. Meanwhile, GK Joy McKenzie made four saves for her second career shutout. The 3-0 upset victory marked just the third shutout over an ACC opponent in program history. “I am very excited for our players. I am very excited for our program,” said coach Patrick Baker. “This was a big game against a big opponent and it was another typical night in the ACC.” The Seminoles finished the season second in conference play with a 4-2-1 record.
