THE FIRST GOAL-SCORER
Canadian defender Janine Lavoie etched her name into the FSU record books by scoring the team’s first goal on September 7, 1995. Her header in the 10-minute mark led the Seminoles to a 5-1 victory over West Florida for the first win in program history. FSU Athletics Director Dave Hart presented Lavoie with an honorary ball during halftime for her milestone goal, and she would later earn team MVP honors. A native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Lavoie played for the Seminoles in the program’s first four seasons. Coach Heather Kerby, who had ties to Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team, noted Lavoie’s potential in Tallahassee. “She was one of the few kids in my province that had a realistic chance of making a national-team program,” Kerby said. Lavoie scored all three career goals during her freshman campaign of 1995, which included a goal against mighty No. 1 North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
