WEINKE’S SWEET 16
One year after his final season in Tallahassee, FSU retired QB Chris Weinke’s No. 16 jersey and “sealed” his locker during the annual Garnet & Gold game on April 7, 2001. The Seminoles highlighted Weinke’s success from the 2000 season, when he won the Heisman Trophy, Davey O’Brien Award and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. He finished his career with 9,839 passing yards, setting both a program record and an ACC record that stood until 2003. “It’s tough knowing the last time I’m going to run out of the tunnel is today,” Weinke said during the ceremony. “There’s a book, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. I’d like to write the sequel, ‘Everything else I need to know about life was at FSU.'”
