SWEATER WEATHER
Date: 1940s, 1950s
These letterman cardigans represent the earliest symbols of athletic pride at FSU, dating from 1948 to 1952. Worn by some of the school’s first varsity athletes, the cardigans come in garnet and cream variations, adorned with bold “F” lettering in either gold or garnet thread. One cream sweater still bears its size tag (48), a subtle reminder of the people who shaped FSU’s sporting foundation. At the time, the transition from Florida State College for Women to a coed university had just begun, and traditions like these sweaters helped unify the new Seminole community under one symbol.
