RUNNING THE METRO
Date: 1980s
FSU competed in the Metro Conference during Mike Martin’s first decade as head coach. Those teams were dynastic, winning the Metro Tournament in all but one year from 1980 to 1991. Martin took home six Metro Conference Coach of the Year Awards himself. One of the biggest victories came in the 1981 tournament, where FSU faced Tulane in a doubleheader with the Metro trophy on the line. The Seminoles absolutely dominated, sweeping the series with scores of 22-4 and 15-5. Between both games, the Noles had 37 runs, 38 hits and six homers. FSU set several Metro Tournament records with 14 home runs, 13 doubles and 12 double plays. Simply put, Martin said it was “a great, great day.”
