MAKING THE MOST OF HIS OPPORTUNITY
Tampa native F Byron Wells worked his way from limited playing time to becoming a reliable sixth man in his redshirt junior and senior campaigns. He played just 20 games over his first two seasons, then sat out the entire 1991-92 season due to an ankle injury. Upon his return, Wells made his name known with 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocks in a big win over Clemson in 1992, which led to more minutes. “This was the case of a guy getting an opportunity and doing something with it,” said coach Pat Kennedy. Wells appeared in two games in the 1992 NCAA Tournament and all four of FSU’s games in the 1993 NCAA Tournament. One memorable moment was a rim-rocking dunk against No. 6 Georgetown to help FSU advance to the Sweet 16.
