GRANTED ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP
Date: 1999 Season
The Grantland Rice National Championship trophy is a relic of college football royalty. Named after the famed sports journalist who christened Notre Dame’s “Four Horsemen,” Grantland Rice was an integral part of the game. In 1999, FSU took home the acclaimed National Championship trophy for the second time in program history. Though Rice had passed by that time, there were plenty of writers to document FSU’s storybook ending. “A perfect finish to a season of imperfection. A wonderful capper to a decade of brilliance — even if it had to come four days into the new century. A game for the ages but not the aged. Well, excepting Florida State coach Bobby Bowden,” quipped sportswriter John Nogowski.
