DUNBAR TO NBA PIPELINE
G Sam Cassell was a product Dunbar High School in Baltimore, an institution known for its basketball prowess in the 1980s. The school produced future NBA stars such as Muggsy Bogues, Reggie Williams, Reggie Lewis and David Wingate. After leaving Dunbar, Cassell spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career at San Jacinto Junior College before joining the Seminoles for the 1991-92 season. He chose FSU because of its reputation as a premier conference for college hoops. “The ACC is the best conference,” Cassell said. “Big crowds, nice arenas, great players. That’s the biggest difference — the skills of the players.” Cassell excelled in his two seasons with FSU, earning Second Team All-Conference honors in both campaigns. Like many Dunbar players before him, Cassell went pro as the No. 24 overall pick of the 1993 NBA Draft. He won three NBA World Championships over 15 seasons in the league.
