ALWAYS PART OF THE TEAM
G Aubry Boyd (No. 20) was an inspiration on and off the court. A Seminole from 1987 to 1991, Boyd played on three NCAA Tournament teams and led the squad with 55 3-pointers in his senior season of 1990-91. Boyd put up 12 points as the No. 7 Seminoles defeated No. 10 USC in the first round of the 1991 NCAA Tournament, helping the Noles win their first tournament game since 1980. Tragedy struck in 1995 when Boyd suffered a devasting neck injury while playing pickup football. He was paralyzed from the neck down, though he eventually regained limited movement in his arms and legs. FSU honored him with “AB” initials on their jerseys in the 1995-96 season, while coach Pat Kennedy started a foundation to help benefit his former player. “Every home game, I try to go over to [Boyd] and say something to him to remind him that he’s still part of the team,” said coach Steve Robinson, who took up the charitable effort after Kennedy departed. “All it takes is just a few moments around him to know that Aubry is a special person.” The Seminoles continue to support Boyd’s foundation today.
