SANDERS SHUTS THE SUGAR BOWL DOOR
Date: January 2, 1989
No. 7 Auburn reached No. 4 FSU’s 22-yard line with 12 seconds remaining while attempting a comeback in the 1989 Sugar Bowl. That was when Seminole cornerback Deion Sanders stepped in front of a potential winning touchdown pass and made the end-zone interception that preserved a 13-7 victory. Played at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, the victory completed an 11-game winning streak after FSU had lost their 1988 season opener. RB Sammie Smith rushed for 115 yards as the Seminoles capped off the season with a Sugar Bowl win and ranked No. 3 in the AP poll.
